The Cura's Tavern of Gran de Gràcia in Barcelona

The maitre, Mr. Jesus, recently retired

In the heart of the Gràcia district lies the restaurant La Taberna del Cura, next door to the Botafumeiro. Here you can find traditional Spanish food and local products in a comfortable, period setting. The service is attentive and you are rarely kept waiting. Years ago there was a fat monk at the entrance who invited you in. You could also serve yourself unlimited cider from the barrels on the wall.

The restaurant started by offering a high-quality fried chicken with a variety of accompaniments. Many locals were then captivated by the place. To me it sometimes seems like the UN, because apart from the tourists, the waiters and cooks are of many nationalities: Philippines, Bangladesh, Cuba, Chile, Nepal, Galicia... The maitres Kamal, Jordi or Jose are charming. The "dolorosa" is run by Michelle, Saren or Monica.

Upon arrival, visitors receive olives, bread with tomato, a drink and the menu. On weekdays there is a very varied menu, with first and second courses to choose from, which allows you to eat very healthy food. For example, a salad and a fish.

The menu is splendid: roast suckling pig, grilled sirloin (from their own calves), hake trunk, priest's pan, calçots (in season, with the option of having them cleaned for you), rovellons (in season), fried baby artichokes, Iberian ham, cheese board, Galician octopus, lacón with turnip greens, patatas bravas, fried aubergines with honey, priest's soup, cod omelette, and a spectacular fried chicken. You can also order seafood or breaded squid. You can eat very well based on tapas and you can order a set menu or dishes from the menu to take away. It is open to the public almost all day.

The restaurant has always been very good at making meat, chicken and cod. The music often plays songs by Julio Iglesias. It has a very good atmosphere, Galician style. It has several dining rooms.

The restaurant has a well-stocked wine cellar. Riojas and Riberas are not lacking. You can order Galician wines such as Albariño and the house wine is very decent.

The home baker is excellent. The cakes are very tasty (massini, sacher, Santiago, caña del Apóstol), with the exception perhaps of the lemon mousse, which is average. The ice creams are of great quality. There is Catalan cream and rice pudding or homemade flan. You can have a fruit salad if you don't want fats in your dessert.

NOTE

The owner is Don José Ramón Neira Pérez, originally from the municipality of Pol (Lugo). His alias is Moncho. He is the head of a leading restaurant chain.
